Coeymans cement plant wants to burn tires in new kiln

Brian Nearing reports in the Albany Times Union that the LarfargeHolcim plant in Coeymans in southern Albany County wants to burn tires to fuel their new kiln. The cement plan is off Route 9W, and it has wanted to burn tires before. Town officials recently discussed a local air pollution law that would severely restrict the burning of such wastes. During the presentation last month, Lafarge Environmental Director Kevin G. Bretz said the company has "developed relationships" and held "preliminary discussions" with potential tire suppliers. Currently LarfargeHolcim burns coal and coke, a coal byproduct, to fire the cement kiln. On Jan. 3 the Department of Enviromental Conservation released a statement that said, in part, "This facility is not free to burn tires at any point or in any amount." Emissions tests proving it will not violate its air pollution permit would be required before any tires could be burnt in Coeymans. <"https://www.timesunion.com/business/article/Cement-plant-eyes-tire-burning-plan-in-Coeyemans-13505586.php?utm_campaign=CMS%20Sharing%20Tools%20(Mobile)&utm_source=t.co&utm_medium=referral">Read the full story in the Albany Times Union.
