Tipping, for some New York workers, ends soon

Jan 01, 2020 11:21 pm
Nick Reisman reports for New York State of Politics that state labor officials announced to an end the subminimum wage for 70,000 tipped workers in so-called “miscellaneous” industries. Workers in the beauty industry, at car washes, valet parking attendants, door people, tour guides, and tow truck drivers are among those affected by the order. "After an exhaustive investigation conducted by the Department of Labor, it’s clear the tip system in many situations is needlessly complicated, allowing unscrupulous businesses to flout our nation-leading minimum wage laws and robbing workers of the paycheck they earned. That ends now,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. Actually, that does not end now, but in a year. The Department of Labor raises the minimum wage for these workers halfway by June 30, and the other half at the end of next year. Read more about this story at New York State of Politics.
