Cayla Harris and Steve Hughes report for the Times Union that the state Working Families Party this week endorsed attorney Matthew Toporowski over incumbent District Attorney and Democrat David Soares and Albany County Legislator Samuel Fein over Assemblymember Democrat John McDonald in the the 108th Assembly district. The Working Families party helped Soares get elected in the 2004 Democratic primary over then-incumbent Paul Clyne, and this is the first time Soares has not received their endorsement. Toporowski was an assistant district attorney in Soares' office. “I vow to end the failed policies of ‘over-prosecute and over-punish’ that have fueled mass incarceration and led to a 50 percent higher incarceration rate than the state’s average in Albany,” Toporowski said in a statement. Fein is in his second-term as an Albany County legislator, and will take on McDonald, he says, because of the four-term incumbent's criticism last year of tenant reform laws and mixed feelings on a $15 minimum wage in upstate New York.
