Catskill overrides county, but does not approve festival
Dec 12, 2019 12:54 am
Sarah Trafton reports for Columbia-Greene Media that the Catskill Planning Board voted Dec. 10 to override the Greene County Planning Board’s vote against a proposed festival at the former Friar Tuck Inn. But the Catskill Planning Board did not approve the The Hello Panda Lantern Festival, as insurance and other issues are still unresolved. The county, which is owed $698,000 in taxes on the Friar Tuck property, said the former resort is now too unsafe to host a festival. The Town of Catskill disagreed, but could not solve all the other issues to turn over a special-use permit. “Unless the town attorney is assured that the town is adequately covered from liability, this board will not approve this site plan,” Catskill Town Board Chairperson Joseph Izzo said. “The applicant has financial issues with the county. We would not accept indemnification by the applicant [in lieu of the insurance carrier]. That is off the table.” If the board approves the festival at its Jan. 14 meeting, the festival would be limited to 100 visitors a day between the hours of 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., with no food or drinks served.
