Opus 40 named among endangered landscapes

Oct 24, 2014 12:05 am
The Associated Press reports in The Daily Freeman that the historic Opus 40 installation in Saugerties is being listed among the nation’s endangered landscapes this year by the Washington-based Cultural Landscape Foundation. The list of 11 sites, announced Wed., Oct. 22, includes parks, gardens, and land-based art threatened by demolition, neglect, or lack of funding. Artist Harvey Fite began working on the 6.5-acre installation in 1939 using rubble from an abandoned bluestone quarry. Fite died in 1976, in the 37th year of his creation, working on the earthwork, in a fall. Hurricanes Irene and Sandy damaged several portions of the site, two reasons for inclusion on this list. The Saugerties spot closed for the winter two weeks ago. See the full story in The Daily Freeman.
