The Associated Press reports in The Daily Freeman that the historic Opus 40 installation in Saugerties is being listed among the nation’s endangered landscapes this year by the Washington-based Cultural Landscape Foundation. The list of 11 sites, announced Wed., Oct. 22, includes parks, gardens, and land-based art threatened by demolition, neglect, or lack of funding. Artist Harvey Fite began working on the 6.5-acre installation in 1939 using rubble from an abandoned bluestone quarry. Fite died in 1976, in the 37th year of his creation, working on the earthwork, in a fall. Hurricanes Irene and Sandy damaged several portions of the site, two reasons for inclusion on this list.
