The Mid-Hudson News Network is reporting that an analysis of the firefighting foam that leaked April 14 from the Atlantic Aviation hangar at New York Stewart International Airport has revealed the presence of the toxic chemicals PFOS and PFOA. The finding was contrary to the report issued by the state Department of Environmental Conservation immediately after the event, indicating the water that discharged into streams on and off the airport was chemical-free. Despite the news, officials are stressing that the city’s drinking water is safe because it is not being drawn from Washington Lake. “Last weekend’s release highlights the vulnerability of the city of Newburgh’s watershed,” said Interim City Manager Joseph Donat. The city needs long-term solutions to provide permanent and safe water supply, he said. Robert Sklarz, a member of the Newburgh City Council, was critical of the firefighting foam leak, saying he did not care if it was Kool-Aid, that nothing should have been allowed to leak from the airport.
