David Figura is reporting for NYup [dot] com that anyone planning a trip north over the Memorial Day weekend seeking outdoor solitude, will likely not be alone. Black flies should be out in maddening numbers in many areas of the Adirondack region, according to one expert. The biting bugs peak every year about this time, with the worst period falling between the Mothers and Fathers Day holidays. Stacy McNulty, associate director and research associate at the SUNY ESF Ecological Center in Newcomb in Franklin County, said this coming weekend “they’ll be coming out hard.” McNulty said the recent stretch of cold weather has slowed down the flies, but with the temperatures in the 70s by the end of the week, all that will change. Seventeen towns located within the Adirondack Park have state-issued permits to treat streams, ponds and other waterways within their jurisdictions with a pesticide that kills the aquatic black fly larvae, according to the Adirondack Explorer.
