Schenectady officer kneels on mans neck, video shows

Jul 07, 2020 6:33 am
Steven Cook reports in the Daily Gazette that a video shared online shows a Schenectady police officer with a knee on a man's neck July 6. The video showed a Schenectady police officer kneeling with his left knee on the neck of someone who is laying face up. Then the officer turns the man's head to the side during the 22-second video clip. The father of the man can be heard telling the officer, "You got the foot on his head. You've got the foot on his head." An officer tells him "go back inside now." CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO A BRIEF CLIP OF THE INCIDENT. Demonstrators protested outside police headquarters later in the day, and reporter Paul Nelson recorded some of the event. CLICK HERE FOR A BRIEF EXCERPT OF THE PROTEST. Neither the Daily Gazette nor the Times Union knew the identity of the officer or the man being attacked as of July 6. Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy said he had only seen a single screenshot from the incident, and that was enough for him to call for an investigation. "I have directed the police chief to open an immediate review of the matter," McCarthy said. The mayor signed an executive order banning choke holds after the Minneapolis police killed George Floyd and protests came to Schenectady. At two of those protests, Schenectady Police Chief Eric Clifford knelt in solidarity with protesters who were calling for an end to police brutality. Clifford did not comment on this story.
