Three Democrats running in Coeymans town elections

Apr 05, 2021 6:00 am

Melanie Lekocevic is reporting for Capital Region Independent Media three Democrats April 3, announced they intend to run in the November Coeymans town elections. Cindy Rowzee, the current town clerk, is running for town supervisor and political newcomers Sara Pruiksma and Yvonne Shackelton are seeking two open seats on the town board. All three women are running on the Democratic and the Working Families Party lines. Rowzee said during the Zoom campaign launch event, “...I am running for town supervisor because ...I have found it increasingly difficult to sit on the sidelines. I believe I have the experience, values and skill set necessary to restore trust in our government.” Rowzee said serving as town clerk for five years has given her a unique understanding of how local government works. If elected, she would cut town costs, update the code of ethics, institute financial disclosure statements for elected officials and solicit feedback on community issues from all perspectives, regardless of party affiliation. Shackelton has been a resident of Coeymans for 25 years, and a member of the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Board of Education since 2018. “I  am  eager  to  bring my love for this town, my values as a working mom, and my years of experience as a data analyst to the task of building a better, more livable and prosperous town for all of us who call Coeymans home,” Shackelton said. Pruiksma said she wants to fight for the community, to put people before profit and to make sure the residents' best interests are always at the heart of any decision made. “Over the past year, I’ve grown considerably concerned about the state of our town. Time and again I’ve witnessed our current administration dismiss the residents’ concerns or remain quiet, make self-serving decisions and keeping the community at arm’s length when their input should be sought with vigor.” The Democratic caucus to officially nominate all three candidates has not yet been scheduled.
