State to locate utility scale solar project in Copake

Dec 22, 2017 7:45 am

Diane Valden is reporting The Columbia Paper it was announced at the December 14 Copake Town Board meeting the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation intends to locate a significant solar energy generation project on 5.2 acres of Taconic State Park property off Orphan Farm Road in Copake Falls. The project is exempt from the town’s new Solar Energy Law enacted in April. It is one of several large-scale photovoltaic electrical generation projects that are part of Governor Cuomo’s Reforming the Energy Vision strategy. Town Supervisor Jeffrey Nayer announced the project at the meeting, noting, the town’s duly enacted solar law is apparently of no consequence, the state’s position is, “We’re doing it.” The project’s array field generation capacity is expected to be 1,262 kilowatts for an annual output of 1,665 Megawatt-hours per year or nearly eight times more electricity than the Copake area of the park uses and about half of what the entire Taconic Park Region uses in a year. The installation of the array is expected to begin in the summer of 2018. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.
