Amanda Purcell reports for Columbia-Greene Media that if local residents with poor broadband signals can get online to read local newspapers, they'd regularly hear about politicians promising to improve rural broadband coverage. Earlier this week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced "The Upstate Cellular Coverage Task Force." Now Assemblyperson Didi Barrett, a Democrat representing parts of Columbia and Dutchess counties, told the media she sent a letter last week to New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli calling for a statewide audit of broadband providers. “Deadlines for the governor’s Broadband for All initiative have passed, and yet, too many homes in the area are still without adequate service,” Barrett said in a statement. “I’m asking Comptroller DiNapoli to take a look at how broadband providers across the state are working to find a solution and bring all New York households into the 21st century.” Ancram Supervisor Arthur Bassin agreed that there are places in his Columbia County town without service. “Last year, Gov. Cuomo was here and basically said we are going to have 100 percent coverage by the end of 2020,” Bassin said. “Right now, for Ancram, it’s looking like we’ll be at 75 percent by the end of the rollout.” Read more about this story at HudsonValley360.com.
