Kenneth C. Crowe II is reporting for the Times Union four people were arraigned October 7, in Columbia County Court, on charges stemming from the assault that took place the night of July 4 and 5, at a private home in Kinderhook. Alex Rosenstrach, 37, a gym owner; his wife Columbia County Sheriff's deputy Kelly Briscoe Rosenstrach; Bryan Haag, 37, an IRS law enforcement agent, and Cory Galord, 31, a contractor, were each indicted on felony counts of second-degree gang assault and first-degree unlawful imprisonment. It is alleged the quartet restrained and attacked Valatie resident and business owner Harold Handy during the party. The Rosenstrachs hosted the annual holiday party at their home at 3193 County Route 21 just outside of the village of Kinderhook. The case has drawn scrutiny as people questioned how the county sheriff could ethically investigate the incident given the Rosenstrachs' ties to area law enforcement. Many residents have spoken up in support of Handy, who owns Handy Repairs, an auto repair business. He was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital after the assault due of the severity of his injuries. The State Police Special Investigations Unit eventually took over the investigation from the sheriff’s office working with District Attorney Paul Czajka. The case remains under investigation, Czajka said. Defense counsel said the case would show that Handy provoked the fights at the party. Judge Richard Koweek signed an order of protection to keep the defendants away from Handy. All four were released on their own recognizance. Read the full story in the Times Union.
