Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media Greene County lawmakers last week approved upgrades to a cell tower intended to improve communications for first responders. The new tower will be installed in Twilight Park, a historic district in Haines Falls. Lawmakers approved the first stage of the project at the cost of just under $94,000. He said the upgraded services will help everyone. “People will have better cell coverage when they call 911,” King said. AT&T and Sprint will lease the tower, with Verizon expected to join in 2020. The upgrade cost a total of about $2 million. Emergency medical services and law enforcement are already using the new radio system. Fire departments will make the switch on Oct. 9, King said.
