Dutchess Legislature to vote on Tyner censure Monday
Jul 08, 2017 12:11 am
Patricia R. Doxsey reports in The Daily Freeman that for the first time ever, the Dutchess County Legislature may censure a legislator, if a vote Mon., July 10 goes against Legislator Joel Tyner. On July 6 the Legislature’s Government and Administration Committee voted unanimously to advance a resolution to censure Tyner for a comment they say was offensive to a county employee. Tyner (D-Clinton) has refused to apologize. Speaking against a county takeover of the city of Poughkeepsie bus system, Tyner said county Department of Public Works Commissioner Robert Balkind, who is Jewish, was “following orders like the Germans 70 years ago.” The resolution also says the county’s Human Rights Commission should investigate Tyner’s comment and if it violated existing county policies on equal employment opportunity and human rights. The story says, "According to Tyner, when pressed about changes to the bus routes, Balkind said: 'Well, the bus schedules have been printed. These are the routes for the next three months.' At that point, Tyner said he responded: 'Wow, Bob. Just following orders like the Germans 70 years ago.' The Dutchess County Legislature meets at 6:30 p.m. at the County Office Building, 22 Market St. in Poughkeepsie. There is a live webcast on the legislature's website.
