Three local schools face large budget cuts

Feb 22, 2024 12:55 pm

Roger Hannigan Gilson reports in the Times Union that while about half of all school districts in New York see cuts to their Foundation Aid, three local schools are facing larger cuts. The Taconic Hills school district in eastern Columbia County could see state aid cut by about 34 percent; Windham-Ashland-Jewett in the northern Catskills faces a cut of 42 percent, and Onteora in northern Ulster County could see a cut of 39 percent. Foundation Aid is determined by a complicated process that considers school population and wealth changes in the district, but previously the state was not allowed to give less aid to a district than the year before. Gov. Kathy Hochul changed that rule a year ago, and now these three local districts face large funding cuts. Lynnette Brunger, the superintendent of the Taconic Hills school district, said, “For me, what’s frustrating about this is that we have been very fiscally responsible as a distinct and we continue to work to make decisions that are in the best interests of our children with the best interests of the classroom and learning environment."
