Residents balk at paying for road transfer

Jan 12, 2017 6:45 am

Roger Hannigan Gilson is reporting in the Register-Star the residents of Kinderhook's private Wild Flower Road are thinking about turning the street into a public road, but the associated costs have caused them to give pause. Wild Flower is a dead-end road, a little more than a half-mile long, located off Mason Road. Under state law, private roads taken over by municipalities must be paved when the road changes hands. In the case of Wild Flower Road, that could cost as much as $300,000. That expense would have to be paid by a special assessment district consisting of the road's property owners. Kinderhook Town Supervisor Patrick Gratten said Wild Flower residents first came to the town in 2015, and said they were tired of maintaining the road themselves. Some residents were present for a recent public hearing on the proposal, but others are weekenders and were unable to attend the meeting. "I don’t think we can make a commitment tonight because people are not available," resident Veronica Pierce said. Gratten agreed that more discussion was needed when everyone was available. A special meeting was scheduled for March 4 to discuss the issue further. Read the full story in the Register-Star.
