Coalition pushes for paid family leave in NY

Claire Hughes is reporting at Capitol Confidential a coalition of doctors and medical groups sent a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state Senate Tue., Nov. 17, pushing for paid family leave benefits for most New Yorkers. The group urged the governor and senators to support a bill the state Assembly passed in March. That bill would extend the state’s disability benefits to cover family caregivers as well as patients. The bill would also raise the $170-a-week cap on disability benefits, established in 1989, to approximately $633 a week. The Business Council of New York State opposes the measure, saying it would add undue administrative costs, especially for smaller companies.
