Aliya Schneider is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media Hudson 4th Ward Alderperson John Rosenthal is leading an effort to change the city's alternate-side parking rules, but Department of Public Works Superintendent Robert Perry says a change is not necessary. At a brief December 23 Department of Public Works Committee meeting, Rosenthal proposed a local law to amend the parking rules, saying street cleaning should not have to be done five days a week. Alternate side parking rules are in effect anywhere from seven days to two days a week, depending on location, in order to allow DPW to clean the streets and to allow for plowing and snow removal. “Alternate-side parking is seven days in the winter months so the city doesn’t have to declare a snow emergency every time you get an inch of snow,” Perry said. “You never know when it will snow.” He said signs appear at the entrances to the city and describe the rules. The alternate rules were assigned decades ago, he said. Vehicles parked on both sides of the street make the fire department’s job more challenging when responding to emergencies, Hudson Fire Chief Anthony Demarco said. “It’s not as simple as most think and it’s definitely not ‘to make money,’” Perry said. Rosenthal argues the alternate side signage is inadequate, that they are faded and difficult to read. Perry said, “In the event, it’s someone’s very, very first time to Hudson and no one told them about alternate-side parking, the learning curve is exactly one night.” Commissioner of Public Works Peter Bujanow said he will call a meeting with Perry, Hudson Common Council President Tom DePietro, Rosenthal and others at the beginning of the new year to talk about the alternate side parking rules.
