Over the weekend the Centers for Disease Control issued a guidance saying older adults should 'stay at home as much as possible,' and Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a State of Emergency in New York because of COVID-19 coronavirus, which has now been reported in Ulster County. Cuomo held a press conference March 8 at the Northwell Laboratories on Long Island, saying this is another facility that the federal government should authorize for testing. Later in the day, the federal government allowed testing there. Cuomo said there were 105 confirmed cases in the state as of 11 a.m. March 7. In Ulster County a Town of Rochester man with the illness and a family member who had been in contact with him are in mandatory isolation. At Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, officials announced that the ECAC Hockey men’s quarterfinals series March 13-15 at RPI's Houston Field House will be played without spectators. So far, Greene County has made no statements about preparations for when the COVID-19 illness is confirmed there. WGXC emailed Kimberly Kaplan, Greene County's Director of Public Health, but did not receive a reply. Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Arizona Congressperson Paul Gosar are self-isolating after shaking hands recently with a man at a conservative conference, who later came down with the illness. Rep. Antonio Delgado, a Democrat from Rhinebeck who represents Ulster County in Congress, released a statement on the presumptive positive case of COVID-19 in Ulster County: “I am aware of the case of COVID-19 in Ulster County and have been in touch with the Ulster County Executive Office. Keeping folks safe across our region is my top priority. I continue to closely monitor this quickly evolving situation and coordinate with local public health and elected officials. As testing occurs we are likely to see the number of cases significantly increase. Now is the time to prepare: not panic. I also want to thank our public health officials and first responders who are working around the clock to protect our communities. It is critically important that folks feel safe and prepared for this growing threat.
