William J. Kemble is reporting for the Daily Freeman the Ulster County Legislature June 16, approved three contracts for county sheriff's deputies to serve as resource officers in area school districts. Under the agreements for the 2020-21 school year, deputies will be stationed at Ulster BOCES, and the Onteora and Rondout Valley schools, providing more than $800,000 in revenue to the county. The agreements were approved on a vote of 19 to 4; legislators Peter Criswell, Abe Uchitelle, Eve Walter and Tracy Bartels, cast the four dissenting votes. Uchitelle said now is the time to rethink policing the schools. "I reached out to several people who work in schools and, pretty uniformly, they had concerns with this program," he said. Bartels said financial aspects of the program should be examined before continuing with the decades-old service. Legislator John Parete said he supports having officers in schools but believes the matter should be left to school districts. “I didn’t realize I was in the school board business now,” he said.
