Cayla Harris is reporting for the Times Union more than 200 people turned out June 28, to rally against Bumpy's Polar Freeze owner David Elmendorf, after he allegedly sent text messages using racial slurs and saying he does not hire black people. Protesters blocked a portion of State Street in Schenectady during the peaceful two-hour demonstration. The protest led to the shop closing three hours early. There were at least five employees inside Bumpy's all afternoon, and by the end of the protest, three had walked out. All were black men. Protesters raised at least $270 for each of the men who left and promised to help them find new jobs. Mikayla Foster, 21, who was born and raised in Schenectady, who works with the community organizing the group All of Us, led the crowd for much of the protest. Bumpy's was open Sunday despite the owner amassing daily fines of $2,000 for ignoring a Schenectady County health department shutdown order over a code violation. Elmendorf was charged with obstructing governmental administration for allegedly tearing down and ripping up notices posted at the State Street business for it to close down. Schenectady County Attorney Chris Gardner last week requested the state attorney general's office conduct an immediate civil rights investigation into Elmendorf's various "discriminatory and illegal actions."
