Kate Seckinger is reporting in The Daily Mail after an eight-year battle, the Cairo Town Board adopted its first ever zoning law in a close vote, Thu., Aug. 20. During the process, which began in June 2007, the town held 60 public meetings and a public hearing. The law was drafted by a zoning commission comprised of business owners, a former member of the Cairo Planning Board, local professionals and hired consultants, including certified planners, a hydrogeologist and a land-use attorney. In a statement made Thursday, Cairo Town Supervisor Ted Banta said, “The creation of this law has been transparent and open, which has been evidenced. The entire process and all of its information has been reported and posted online....” Tensions over the zoning plan were worsened when the town board and members of the Cairo Planning Board clashed over the proposed law. Despite adoption of local law No. 5 of 2015, the controversy is expected to continue. Immediately following a 3 to 2 vote, the board voted to start the process of amending the newly passed regulations. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.
