Nora Mishanec is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the state of New York suspended the Lebanon Valley Speedway’s liquor license July 3. The Liquor Authority issued the emergency suspension order after the racetrack indicated to authority officials that it intended to hold its planned Independence Day event in defiance of state regulations limiting gatherings to 50 people. The racetrack canceled the event after the license suspension was ordered, and the races were broadcast online without spectators. The attorney for Lebanon Valley, Ken McGuire Jr., called the authority's action an example of “rampant unfair enforcement.” The governor is using enforcement agencies to strong-arm people into compliance with his rules, McGuire said. New Lebanon Town Supervisor Tistrya Houghtling called the Lebanon Valley Speedway a “critical local business” and said the racetrack is not alone in facing reopening woes. The suspension marks the second time the state has moved to close a Columbia County business during the coronavirus shutdown. Hudson Brewing Company had its liquor license suspended in late May for allowing customers to congregate outside the brewery in violation of state restrictions on gatherings.
