Jonathan Stempel reports for Reuters that a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report released April 11 issued General Electric a “certificate of completion” for its work removing PCB contamination out of the Hudson River. New York State officials responded hours later saying they plan to sue to get GE to finish the job. “This certification does not let GE off the hook,” DEC Regional Administrator Pete Lopez, a former Republican Assemblyperson who represented Greene County, claimed. “If the data shows we’re not heading in the right direction, we have the ability to compel more work, which could mean more dredging.” Governor Andrew Cuomo did not agree. “Time and again the Trump administration puts corporations and polluters’ interests ahead of public health and the environment,” Cuomo said. “Since the EPA has failed to hold GE accountable for fulfilling its obligation to restore the river, New York State will take any action necessary to protect our waterways.” The EPA previously said it would be at least 50 years before it is safe to eat fish from the Hudson River.
