Kaaterskill Falls safety at issue again

Apr 19, 2018 12:15 pm
Carly Miller reports for Columbia-Greene Media that Hunter town officials want the Department of Environmental Conservation to add new regulations at Kaaterskill Falls. The DEC just proposed a 240-person daily access limit to Ulster County swimming hole Peekamoose Blue Hole, after adding restrictions on hours, parking, and campfires, and adding portable toilets and patrols there. Several deaths at Kaaterskill Falls have Town Supervisor Daryl Legg impatient. “To me, starting at Blue Hole is kind of like a slap in the face,” Legg said at Hunter Town Board meeting April 17. “Blue Hole gets stewards and outhouses, meanwhile we’ve got people slacklining over Kaaterskill Falls and nothing in place to stop it.... If you want to kill yourself, that’s one thing, but why kill my friends to go down there to rescue you? The health and safety issue is the people that live here trying to help the people that come here.” Since 1998, there have been five deaths at Kaaterskill Falls, with DEC Forest Rangers reporting 39 incidents, many requiring a rescue team. The DEC says it has, "more than $800,000 invested in safety and accessibility improvements at Kaaterskill Falls, a sustained and increased presence of Forest Rangers and back-country stewards, and an extensive outreach effort reminding visitors to follow important safety measures while visiting New York’s trails.” Read the full story at HudsonValley360.com.
