Legislature fast-tracking bill for school bus surveillance cameras
Mar 22, 2019 12:56 am
Rick Karlin reports at Capitol Confidential that on March 19 the State Assembly passed a bill mandating survelliance cameras on school buses. Under current law, drivers who ignore bus stop signs can only get a $250 ticket if a police officer witnesses the act. The cameras would provide evidence to fine drivers when police are not around. The State Senate is now slated to pass the proposal in its one-house budget plan. “We’re looking to fast-track it,” said Sen. Tim Kennedy, a Democrat from Buffalo. Errant drivers ignoring stop signs killed one student in New York in 2014, and in 2016. “We’ve had some unbelievable close calls this year,” said Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple. But James Walker, of the National Motorists Association, cites National High Safety Administration statistics that show 71 people younger than age 19 were killed by school buses and only 40 by passing vehicles between 2005 and 2014.
