Lawrence will not seek reelection to Greene County Legislature this fall
Andrea Macko is reporting for Porcupiine Soup Greene County Legislator William Lawrence has announced he will not seek reelection in November. The Cairo Republican has served in elected office for more than 40 years. “I have really loved the job of being a public servant for both Cairo and Greene County,” said Lawrence. “I have devoted a large part of my life to this job and I feel that I am leaving it in better shape than when I found it when I was first elected back in 1979. But now I want to relax and spend what time I have with my family, especially my great-grandchildren,” he said. Among those who have indicated interest in taking Lawrence's place is current Cairo Town Supervisor Republican John Coyne. Sherry B. True, co-president of the Cairo Development Foundation, has also said she will seek the Republican endorsement for legislator. True ran for supervisor two years ago as a third-party candidate. Cairo has two seats on the county Legislature. Incumbent Democrat Harry Lennon will seek a sixth term this year. Cairo Democratic Chair Valerie McAviney said three Democrats have declared their intent to run: Lennon, William (Bill) Scheriff and Joe Colangelo. The committee has endorsed Lennon and Sheriff, McAviney said. Republicans Jason Watts and Monica Kenny-Keff are vying for the GOP nod for town supervisor. No Democrats have officially announced their candidacy yet, McAviney said. Cairo Republicans will caucus on March 18 at Gallagher’s Banquet Hall. There is no date yet for a Democratic caucus.
