Cicadas, at 94 decibels, may soon be heard

May 11, 2013 12:03 am
Ken Schachter in Newsday reports that the 17-year "Brood II" cicadas may be seen and heard throughout the Hudson Valley when ground temperatures reach 64 degrees. At 94 decibels, many town planning boards have ordinances against such nuisances. The Cornell Cooperative Extension reports the adults will populate a narrow band from western Massachusetts and Connecticut, as well as the Hudson Valley, south to northern and western North Carolina, putting the WGXC listening area on the outskirts of their range. WNYC's "Radiolab" Cicada Tracker has sightings in Western Massachusetts and just north of Poughkeepsie, so far this spring, and report ground temperature in Chatham still well below the cicada threshold.
