Dutchess County Legislature votes to censure Tyner

Jul 11, 2017 8:00 am

Patricia Doxsey is reporting in the Daily Freeman for the first time in its history, the Dutchess County Legislature has censured one of its members. Legislators voted unanimously Mon., Jul. 10, to take the action against fellow lawmaker Joel Tyner for a remark he made during a Democratic caucus in June. Tyner was not permitted to cast a vote on the resolution because the measure was directly related to him. The censure condemns the Clinton Democrat for saying that county Department of Public Works Commissioner Robert Balkind, who is Jewish, was “following orders like the Germans 70 years ago” in advancing plans for a county takeover of the city of Poughkeepsie bus system. Speaking against the censure Monday night were Tyner's wife, Laila Cohen-Tyner, his mother, Judy Malestrom, and Poughkeepsie residents, Judy Green and Gus Kazolias. Kazolias called the censure "a lynching." Tyner previously said he did not mean to offend Balkind, saying he should have chosen different words to express his outrage over the county takeover of the city bus system. Tyner has declined repeated calls to apologize to Balkind for the remarks. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
