Bill pending in NYS Senate would extend CVA

Jan 21, 2020 1:00 pm
Jane Flasch is reporting for WHAM-TV a bill to extend the Child Victims Act for a second year has been introduced in the New York State Senate. The bill, sponsored by Democrat Brad Hoylman would add a full year to the already extended statute of limitations for certain child sexual abuse cases. In August 2019, the law opened a year-long window for sex abuse victims to take legal action against their alleged abusers, regardless of when the alleged abuse may have occurred. More than 1,300 civil lawsuits have been filed statewide by at least 1,700 child sex abuse survivors as of December. Hoylman argues that adding an additional year onto the CVA would give other survivors more time to learn about the new law and "seek the justice that was denied them by New York's formerly prohibitive civil statute of limitations." If approved, the measure would take effect immediately. Read the full story at CBS6Albany [dot] com.
