DEC rangers, Hunter police rescue lost hikers
Bill Williams is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media that two hikers from New York City January 12, were rescued by state forest rangers after the pair got lost on a trail in Haines Falls, Department of Environmental Conservation spokesperson Jeff Wernick said. Around 6 p.m.,the two unidentified people called Greene County 911 to report they were lost on the Layman’s Monument Trail near Kaaterskill Falls, Wernick said. Ranger Daniel Fox contacted the hikers via cellphone and pinpointed their location and condition. They told Fox they were not injured, but needed help because it was dark and the trail was icy, Wernick said. Fox, along with Acting Lt. Jeff Breigle and Hunter police officers found the hikers about a mile in on the Escarpment Trail and gave them hand and feet warmers, headlamps and microspikes. The group then hiked back out to the Lauren House Road trailhead and the hikers and officers left the scene at 8:20 p.m. Read more about this story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
