Ashby upset about veterans cuts in Cuomo's budget proposal

Spectrum News reports that Assemblyperson Jake Ashby is upset that scholarships for gold star families aren’t in this year’s state budget proposal. “The governor said this was a priority and often says in his budgets that a budget is about priorities and why issues we may think don’t belong in the budget appear. Is this a priority or not, governor?” The funding was in the 2019 budget. Ashby, a Republican who represents Rensselaer County and parts of Columbia County in the 107th District, said Cuomo also proposes to cut some money from the Dwyer fund, a peer-to-peer counseling program for veterans. “This is a huge, huge issue for veterans coming back who are attempting to reintegrate, and their families,” said Ashby, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan as a Captain in the army reserve. “Again, we’re seeing that this has been cut and we have to go back and we have to fight for it.” New York has a $6 billion budget deficit.
