Albany Co. lawmakers reject term limits
Sep 11, 2019 1:15 pm
Amanda Fries is reporting for the Times Union Albany County lawmakers September 9, rejected term limits for themselves, as well as the county executive and comptroller. Local Law T would have taken effect in 2020, and limited the county’s 39 legislators, the executive and the comptroller to three four-year terms. The legislature voted down the measure 27 to 12. The vote split down party lines, with Republicans voting in favor of terms limits and most Democrats voting against it. The bill's sponsor, Colonie Republican Todd Drake, said the new local law was intended to eliminate "that status quo government that has been going on for decades. It's not just here, it's everywhere." Drake also has proposed an anti-nepotism policy that would prohibit the hiring or appointment of relatives of county elected officials to any paid positions that qualified as a policy-making job or high-ranking position. That legislation is set for a public hearing September 24. Read the full story in the Times Union.
