Dec 06, 2017 12:24 pm
The Albany Times Union reports that New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is calling on Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota to resign in the wake of a several accusations of sexual misconduct. On Facebook, Gillibrand wrote, "I have been shocked and disappointed to learn over the last few weeks that a colleague I am fond of personally has engaged in behavior towards women that is unacceptable. I consider Senator Franken to be a friend and have enjoyed working with him in the Senate in our shared fight to help American families.... While Senator Franken is entitled to have the Ethics Committee conclude its review, I believe it would be better for our country if he sent a clear message that any kind of mistreatment of women in our society isn't acceptable by stepping aside to let someone else serve." So far, Patty Murray of Washington, Maggie Hirono of Hawaii, Claire McCaskill of Maine, and Kamala Harris of California are among the other senators calling for Franken's resignation. On Dec. 5, Rep. John Conyers Jr. of Michigan, a Democrat, resigned over sexual harassment accusations, while President Donald Trump, a Republican, has not resigned despite multiple similar accusations, and next week Republicans in Alabama may elect a man accused of sexually mistreating a 14-year-old girl, and several other young women.
