The Columbia Paper is reporting the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has received a Brownfield Cleanup Program application and accompanying paperwork from Allied Healthcare Products, Inc. for the site located at 46 New Street in Stuyvesant. The DEC has now opened public comment on the application. The 4-acre property, which includes three main and multiple out buildings, was purchased in 1948 for the manufacture of medical gases, including anesthetics, Baralyme and Trimethylene chrlorobromide. The company also made the machines used to administer the gases. Production waste was pumped from the plant to a waste pit on the western side of the property. The company changed hands multiple times before it was purchased by the current owner, Allied Healthcare. The DEC Brownfield Cleanup Program is designed to encourage private-sector cleanups of brownfields and to promote their redevelopment as a means to revitalize economically blighted communities. Since its inception in 2003, the brownfield program has led to the cleanup of more than 300 contaminated sites statewide; the program currently has more than 350 active sites.
