Local school leaders dismiss election district idea

Richard Moody is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media a bill awaiting Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s signature would allow school boards of central and union free school districts to create wards for school board elections. The measure was passed by the state Assembly and Senate in June and delivered to the governor on Dec. 6. The purpose of the new law would be to create a more balanced representation in school districts that cover large geographic areas. According to the bill language, voters would have the option to approve a referendum that would restrict the election of board of education candidates to the particular district where they live. Currently, candidates are elected at large in most districts. Moody spoke to Coxsackie-Athens Central School District Superintendent Randy Squier and Taconic Hills Central School District Superintendent Neil Howard about the bill. Neither thought implementing election wards in their respective districts was necessary. “This legislation is looking for a solution to a problem that does not exist,” Squier said.
