Ulster County issues report on local housing crisis

Mar 08, 2021 6:00 am
Patricia R. Doxsey reports in the Daily Freeman that while government officials in Hudson and Catskill have failed so far to pass measures to address the local housing crisis, Ulster County officials have released a 144-page report on the issue. The recommendations in the report include creating an ongoing Housing Task Force, and a housing fund that would provide a dedicated source of money for new housing, or to provide rental assistance, and to fund infrastructure improvements to encourage housing development. Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan formed the nine-member advisory committee in 2020 during the pandemic to look into the causes of the housing shortage, and possible solutions. Many people from New York City moved into the Hudson Valley during the pandemic, making the housing crisis here worse. "Renters disproportionately experience low wages as compared to homeowners," according to the report that noted that when adjusted for inflation, the median income for owner-occupied households dropped three percent, while the income for renters decreased by 13 percent. Meanwhile, the average sale price of a single-family home rose 17 percent between 2013 and 2019 in Ulster County. Read more about this story in the Daily Freeman.
