Red Hook expected to extend its mining, timber harvesting moratorium

Mar 04, 2019 3:00 pm
William J. Kemble is reporting for the Daily Freeman Red Hook town officials are thinking about adding three months to a moratorium on mining, water extraction and timber harvesting operations. A public hearing was held last week that failed to draw any comments. Under the moratorium there cannot be: collection of spring water for sale or purposes other than on-premise use; removal of 100 yards of sand, gravel, clay, stone, loam, humus or topsoil during a 12-month period; and, timber harvesting, commercial forestry or commercial logging, unless it complies with state forest management practices. Supervisor Robert McKeon said a draft of the proposed revisions to land-use regulations will be ready later this month. The town board is expected to vote Mar. 12, on the moratorium extension, which would continue through Jun. 4. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
