Arthur Cusano is reporting in the Register Star the Greenport Town Board Wed., Sept. 3, declared its opposition to the pending Greenport Gardens project, which is currently being developed by the Mental Health Association of Columbia-Greene Counties. The proposed housing project would provide housing to mental health consumers, in addition to affordable housing for county residents. In announcing its decision, the board indicated it was uncomfortable with the location, on Green Acres Road near Joslen Boulevard. Town Supervisor John Porreca said, "We don't disapprove of it, but we don't feel comfortable with the location." He said observations of foot and bicycle traffic on Joslen was the basis of the board's position. Board member Clayton Clark said, “To add more cars and people on foot to that location is going to make a very big hazard." The board’s resolution holds little weight, and is a largely symbolic gesture, because the Planning Board is in charge of approving the project. Read the full story in the Register Star.
