Cuomo vetoes bill to allow lottery winners to remain anonymous

Ken Lovett is reporting in the Daily News Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo December 8, vetoed a bill that would have allowed lottery winners to remain anonymous. He said having winners come forward serves a public purpose by letting everyone know people actually do win the jackpots, and that the games are on the up-and-up. Under state law, lottery winners in most cases must agree to be identified publicly. The vetoed bill would have prohibited the state lottery from identifying the holder of a winning ticket if that person made the request in writing. “The presentation and sharing of certain information provides comfort to the general public that there was an actual winner, and the state was not simply adding all the money to its own coffers,” Cuomo wrote in his veto message. Sponsors of the bill said the idea of giving the privacy option was to protect lottery winners from being targets of scams and criminal activity. Read the full story in the Daily News.
