Paul Kirby in The Daily Freeman reports that the city of Kingston in Ulster County has begun switching to light-emitting diode, or LED, streetlights to save money. City officials guess that the changeover will save Kingston about $400,000 per year. “We have been collaborating with the Mid-Hudson Street Light Consortium on this project and are moving along, but we are still working on some of the logistics of this project,” Mayor Steve Noble said in an email. “In the meantime, [the city Department of Public Works] and its contractors have installed over 150 LED streetlights.” Noble claims the city has already saved $275,000 after buying 2,012 streetlights and fixtures from Poughkeepsie-based Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. for about $470,000 last year. Only 150 streetlights, out of 2,420, have been installed so far. In October 2015 the Kingston City Council approved borrowing up to $2.1 million for LED streetlights throughout Kingston. The council also borrowed $105,000 for engineering and design work for the project.
