Coxsackie-Athens schools thinking about changing its mascot

Mar 02, 2021 5:45 am

Andrea Macko is reporting for Porcupine Soup the Coxsackie-Athens School District Wed., Mar. 3, will hold a virtual public forum on whether to retire the school's longtime school mascot, the Indian. According to a notice on the district’s website, “The Board of Education liaison committee invites you to share your thoughts on retiring our current mascot name and any associated images.” An online petition opposed to the replacement was started at change [dot] org by district resident Dana Workman. As of late March 1, the petition had accumulated more than 200 signatures. “I feel that changing the mascot is like changing history,” Workman writes. “When I say that, I mean changing what we grew up knowing.” They added that “the school is simply honoring those who should be honored and respected.” Workman also noted the potential cost of such a change. The liaison committee will report back to the full Board of Education on March 18. Saying the board has made no decision on the topic, residents are being invited to share their “thoughts on creating a new mascot” by completing an online survey on the district’s website or by signing up to speak at an online virtual public forum at 6:30 p.m., Wed., Mar. 3. Residents may also send a letter to Michelle Schoenborn, district clerk, in care of the district at 24 Sunset Blvd. Coxsackie, NY 12051. Read the full story in Porcupine Soup.
