MidHudsonNews [dot] com is reporting New York Stewart International Airport's projection of serving 600,000 passengers in 2018, was exceeded by more than 90,000 people, an increase of 54 percent over 2017. Airport Business Development Director Michael Torelli told the Stewart Airport Commission Jan. 29, most of that growth can be attributed to carrier Norwegian Air's European service. The amount of cargo that was moved through Stewart in 2018, also increased over the previous year. Torelli said that a reduction in some service by Norwegian was seasonal. The previous schedule of 21 flights per week is expected to resume in March. In other Stewart news, the Port Authority has awarded a $5.6 million contract to a San Francisco company to build a solar canopy over a portion of the main parking lot in front of the Stewart terminal. Torelli told the commission Forefront Power was chosen from among more than a dozen bidders for the project. Most, if not all, of the power generated by the panels will be consumed by the terminal.
