Casey Seiler is reporting at Capitol Confidential Democrat Sean Eldridge, who is seeking the 19th Congressional District seat currently held by Republican Chris Gibson, has weighed in on the U.S. Supreme Court’s McCutcheon decision, which knocked down limits on donors in federal elections. In a statement released Wed., Apr. 2, Eldridge called the court's ruling a disappointing step backward for democracy. “Right now the voices of everyday New Yorkers are being drowned out by the big money and corporate interests in our politics, and today’s ruling only makes that problem worse," Eldridge said. He called for passage of comprehensive campaign finance reform that would overturn the Citizens United decision and strengthen transparency in politics. While Eldridge is not accepting money from corporate PACs, he donated $715,000 to his own campaign, making him No. 3 on the national list of self-funded House candidates, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
