Greene County signs on to Dutchess lawsuit against EPA over Hudson River PCBs

Nov 25, 2019 12:23 am
Sarah Trafton reports for Columbia-Greene Media that Greene County legislators passed a largely symbolic measure Nov. 20 in support of Dutchess County's lawsuit with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over the agency’s certification that General Electric completed its cleanup of the Hudson River. GE dumped an estimated 1.3 million pounds of PCBs into the river last century, and was ordered to dredge out some of that from the poisoned riverbed. But many environmental advocates do not believe GE has done enough, and don't agree with the EPA's certification of completion. There are 39 miles of Hudson River shoreline along the Greene County border. “Greene County recognizes that the Hudson River is a unique and complex asset, essential to the environmental, scenic and economic well-being of Greene County,” the resolution passed last week reads. New York Attorney General Letitia James said in August that approximately 54 tons of PCBs remain in the Hudson River. Ulster County and Rockland County have also signed on to the Dutchess County lawsuit. Read more about this story at HudsonValley360.com.
