Albany leaders name commission for campaign financing reform

Denis Slattery reports in the New York Daily News that nine people were named to a commission July 3 to create a statewide system of public campaign financing. After lawmakers and Gov. Andrew Cuomo failed to create public campaign financing rules in this year’s budget they created a commission to set up a public financing system. “New York’s electoral system is in desperate need of reform. Dark money routinely pours in to control public opinion, misinform voters, and benefit special interests," Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said. "I am confident this commission will enact a public financing plan that will make our elections fairer.” The commission has until Dec. 1 to create a public financing system, which becomes law unless the Senate and Assembly return to the capital within 20 days to change their plan. Republican legislative leaders choose two of the commission members, while Cuomo, Stewart-Cousins, and Assembly leader Carl Heastie picked the others. Among those named were the state Democratic Committee Chairperson Jay Jacobs, and Mylan Denerstein, a former attorney for Cuomo. Read more about this story in the New York Daily News.
