Rural Chatham still lacks broadband

Emilia Teasdale reports in The Columbia Paper that town Board member Bob Balcom explained at a Jan. 17 meeting why there is still no high speed internet service available in parts of Chatham. Spectrum covers the town for cable television. “They have laid down so much fiber [optic cable] in the density areas,” he said. Balcom says he has talked with Consolidated about upping service in the parts of Chatham with lower population density. But Consolidated told him they lack the infrastructure to cover those area. “We have to start putting pressure on these companies,” Balcom said. When buying Time-Warner, Spectrum promised to provide broadband service to rural areas. But last year the Public Service Commission ruled that the company misled the state and did not provide rural internet service. Now Spectrum is not allowed to operate in New York, though negotiations continue on that issue. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.
