Ulster County Sheriff will run again; Saugerties chief may challenge him

Nov 18, 2017 12:15 am
Diane Pineiro-Zucker reports in The Daily Freeman that Ulster County Sheriff Paul VanBlarcum is definitely running for a fourth term in 2018, and Saugerties Police Chief Joseph Sinagra might challenge him. VanBlarcum is a registered Democrat who made two controversial statements during his current term. In 2015 VanBlarcum wrote on the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page just after a mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., “In light of recent events that have occurred in the United States and around the world, I want to encourage citizens of Ulster County who are licensed to carry a firearm to PLEASE DO SO.” Last weekend, as no National Football League players protested during the national anthem the sheriff urged people to boycott NFL games because of players’ protests during the playing of the national anthem. “I don’t think I’m controversial. I respect everybody’s opinion,” VanBlarcum said Nov. 17. Sinagra, 52, is not enrolled in a political party, told the newspaper he intends to run for sheriff sometime. “If and when I choose to run, I won’t make a decision until after the first of the year,” Sinagra said Nov. 16.
