Jim Planck reports in The Daily Mail the Village of Catskill is contemplating the adoption of a local law to prohibit the use of waste brine from fracking as a de-icer on village roads and properties. The brine is toxic, and in some cases radioactive. Village board members were provided with background information, and a copy of a proposed law Wed., Aug. 14, by the newly formed group, the Greene Renewable Energy & Environmental Network, also known as GREEN. GREEN spokeswoman Mary Finneran said fracking brine poses a health and safety hazard on several levels and urged the board to take action. She said, “You need to have a law, a prohibition, in place.” Larry Federman, a Catskill resident and member of the Town Planning Board, urged the village to lead by example. PLAY CLIP (1:49:38). WGXC programmer and Community Council member Sam Sebren, a founding member of GREEN, said following the meeting the Village Board appeared to have reached a consensus that the brine ban would pass soon.
