New York Democrats pass bills making it easier to vote
Michael Gormley reports in Newsday that while many states around the country this year are making it more difficult to vote, New York's legislature on June 9 passed measures to make early voting and mail-in balloting easier. If the bills are signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, an online system will allow voters to make sure their ballots have been received and counted. Last year, Cuomo expanded the use of mail-in voting under executive orders during the COVID-19 pandemic. So this year the legislature fine-tuned the procedures. "These bills will dramatically reduce the long early voting lines we experienced last year and ensure we won’t have to wait weeks on end to discover who wins an election," said Senate Deputy Majority Leader Michael Gianaris, a Queens Democrat. While there were only a handful of examples of any election fraud anywhere in the country recently, Republicans continue to falsely claim otherwise in opposition to measures making it easier for citizens to vote. "My concern is we are making it easier and easier for criminals to engage in election fraud," said Sen. George Borrello, a Western New York Republican. Read more about this story in Newsday.
